Kosovo partition ideas are “absolutely unacceptable”, said former EU Kosovo Envoy Wolfgang Ischinger. He added that a permanent solution to Belgrade and Pristina's problem was an “assumption to continue along the EU path”. “Partition of Kosovo is unacceptable” “I remain of the opinion that I have been advocating for years, that such ideas are absolutely unacceptable,” Ischinger told Deutsche Welle Radio. The German diplomat believes that the fact that KFOR Commander Erhard Buhler was acting as a mediator in the process of finding a solution to the situation in the north “shows that KFOR sees Kosovo as an integral state”. “We should now reach a compromise and find a permanent solution to Serbia and Kosovo’s problem,” he stressed and added that such solution was possible and “within reach”. “That’s an assumption to continue along the road toward the EU,” Ischinger stressed, adding that “both sides need to implement what has been agreed”. “We are now waiting for Kosovo Serbs to carry out their part,” he said and stressed that it was important to remind “everybody, especially Belgrade officials that without resolving of the conflict, regardless of the way, the EU door cannot open any more for Serbia and it will not open”. Pointing out that the EU never set a specific solution as a condition, he said that there was still a clear request – to “create a situation in which Serbia and Kosovo’s relations would be without problems and tensions”. “It is an impossible situation in which a new EU member will import its territorial problems with its EU accession. That will not happen, it must not happen. I think that Belgrade is quite aware of that,” Ischinger concluded.
