Serbia's ruling parties are aware that Mladic’s arrest is not a popular move that would likely lose them the next election, Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic says. He expects the parties of the ruling coalition to lose a significant number of votes in the next elections due to the arrest of the most wanted Hague indictee. Minister: Arrest could cost us election victory Ljajic told Sarajevo-based daily Avaz that “they decided to make this move because it is in the interest of Serbia and the whole region, even though they were aware of it”. “We knew that majority of citizens were against his extradition to The Hague. All polls showed it, including the last one we did about ten days ago. It showed that 51 percent of the Serbian citizens opposed his extradition and that 34 percent were for it,” the Serbian government’s National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal president was quoted as saying. According to him, the worst thing is the fact that far-right groups will benefit most from the situation. Ljajic has assessed that Mladic is a catalyst of radicalization in Serbia and an obstacle to reconciliation in the region, especially between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. “We have removed the obstacle now. That does not mean that things will go smoothly, because there are still many problems,” he told the daily. Rasim Ljajic
