Number of Serbs south of Kosovska Mitrovica who have agreed to take part in a population census is on the rise. More than 7,000 Serbs took part in the census in Gracanica. Number of K. Few Serbs agreed to take part in the population and housing census in the first several days. Surveyor Goran Stojanovic says that it was very difficult to work in the beginning. They were facing a boycott and many unpleasant situations, but Serbs are more interested in taking part in the census in the last several days. However, there are still those who remain determined not to participate in the census. Gracanica Municipal President Bojan Stojanovic says that Serbs will cause a permanent damage if the census is unsuccessful and that they will be facing the consequences in the upcoming period. Serbian government’s institutions in Kosovo have stated that participation in the census is an individual decision, adding that they do not believe in credibility of the released information about the number of surveyed Serbs. The Statistical Office in Pristina has announced that citizens in mainly Serb-populated areas have showed increased interest in the census which will be finished in four days. Elsewhere, one and a half million people were registered in the first ten days of the census in Kosovo, the Kosovo statistical office announced. Executive Director Ibrahim Shabani said at a news conference on Tuesday that the census would be completed by April 15. As far as northern, Serb-dominated areas of Kosovo where the census has not started, Shabani said that "Kosovo institutions are looking for a solution in cooperation with international organizations". According to the Albanian language media, the population and housing census in northern Kosovo could be held in May "if agreement is reached". The census would be conducted by international census takers from UNOPS, according to this.
