EU Integration Office Director Milica Delevic has stated that one out of 629 EC’s additional questions is about the tender for the sale of Telekom Srbija. “The questions are mostly explanations and there is a certain number of essential, new questions,” she told B92. Telekom mentioned in additional EC questions Delevic pointed out that the question about Telekom was about the current state of the tender procedure for the sale of the state-owned telecommunications company. She said that Serbia would submit the answers to additional EC’s questions by the end of April. The EU Integration Office director pointed out that EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule gave an important message in the Serbian parliament that Serbia had many more issues to resolve but that Europe was sure the country could do it. “I do not believe that the opinion has sprung from idealism, but rather from the efforts so far invested in the European integration process,” she told B92. “We are talking about things that can be done, but this means we should be thoroughly committed to really see the positive outcome,” she stressed. Commenting on the government’s ambition to get the EU candidate status by the end of the year, Delevic said that it was possible but that many things still needed to be done in order to fulfill the EU’s conditions. “The list of objectives is clear. The biggest part of the job lies ahead. It will take a lot of effort to finish things,” she stressed. Delevic has repeated that the EU integration is not a matter of some political program or a competition who is right and who is wrong or who did more or less. “This is an enormous amount of work which must be done. Everyone should do their job, but the biggest responsibility falls on the shoulders of the executive power,” she pointed out. Noting that at the moment, it cannot be said with certainty whether Serbia will or will not get the candidacy status, she stressed, however, that the list of objectives was quite clear. “Given what has been achieved in the implementation of the Action Plan so far, the biggest part of the job lies ahead,” Delevic pointed out. The EU has, among other things, requested Serbia to change the election law and repeal blank resignation letters, regulate financing of political parties, cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and combat against corruption and organized crime. Delevic said it was unreasonable to expect corruption and organized crime could be eradicated by the time the European Commission gave its opinion on granting Serbia the EU membership candidate status. “We cannot become a regulated society in six months, as this is a process, not an event, but it must become evident that decisive steps have been made to make sure such negative phenomena are more an exception than a regular way in which the society functions,” she stressed.
