EULEX prosecutors have begun a preliminary investigation into the allegations made in CoE Rapporteur Dick Marty's report on organ trafficking in Kosovo. EULEX has the capacity, competence, location and authority to conduct the inquiry and is willing to do so, says the release. EULEX starts preliminary investigation According to the announcement, EULEX prosecutors can start working immediately if they receive the evidence Marty collected. The report points to Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci as the leader of the group responsible for organ trafficking. EULEX called on all organizations and individuals who were in possession of any kind of evidence regarding the allegations to present it. EULEX expresses understanding about concerns for witness safety, but adds it has full confidence in its witness protection unit. Experience has shown that it is capable of dealing with highly sensitive cases, it is said in the announcement which adds that EULEX is a rule of law mission and, as such, it will only act on evidence. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted the resolution based on Marty’s report on human organ trafficking in Kosovo and Albania on January 26.
