It was confirmed at an EU ministerial meeting that Serbia’s application for EU candidate status would be sent to the European Commission in October. Slovenia proposed the idea to the ministers and all 27 member-states confirmed that Serbia’s application should be forwarded to the EC, even though Holland’s foreign minister said that his country’s government has not been formed yet and that it cannot take a formal stance until this happens and consultations are held on the issue. Minister Zbogar said that the majority in the EU backed the proposal during an informal meeting in Brussels two days ago, which is why he expects foreign ministers to agree at the meeting in Brussels today. According to Djelic, a Council of Europe meeting between presidents and prime ministers, which is scheduled for this week, would confirm Serbia's progress towards the EU. It is very significant that Germany and France now support sending Serbia's application to the EC, Djelic told Radio Television Serbia (RTS). French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said in a statement to daily Vecernje Novosti that his country believes that Serbia's application for candidate status should be forwarded to the European Commission without further delay. Valero said that Serbia's application for membership in the Union would be forwarded as soon as the 27 EU member-states reach a consensus. “France wants this to happen soon. EU ministers would meet again on Thursday in order to discuss key foreign policies issues related to the Western Balkans.

The ministers are also expected to give evaluations on relations with the countries of the region.

Serbia's Deputy Prime Božidar Đelić said earlier that he expected Serbia's EU application to be sent to the European Commission (EC) in October.

Slovenia's government confirmed late on Sunday that its Foreign Minister Samuel Žbogar would urge opening the at today's meeting of the EU foreign ministers, according to B92’s sources.

Minister Žbogar said that the majority in the EU backed the proposal during an informal meeting in Brussels two days ago, which is why he expects foreign ministers to agree at the meeting in Brussels today.
