The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia stated that Belgrade needs to implement constructive policies toward the Sandzak region. Committee President Sonja Biserko said that the Islamic community and Bosniaks in Serbia are waiting for Belgrade to begin with constructive policies toward this minority. “Changes in Sandzak policies needed” She said that the Sandzak problem is one that clearly illustrates the inability of Serbia to solve its own basic internal problems, and in this case, its relations with minorities and regionalization. Biserko said that the relations between the political elite and Sandzak lack a long-term perspective, adding that excluding minority communities has led to their segregation. “An atmosphere for the radicalization of the Bosniak minority is being created, with the goal of stopping its adequate constitution, especially taking into consideration that the Bosniak minority did not have an infrastructure just like all newer minorities in Serbia on the territory of the former Yugoslavia, so that it was much easier to manipulate with them,” she said. Biserko said that Muamer Zukorlic’s Islamic Community in Serbia is the only real representative community in Sandzak and that it should be accepted as a reality. Sonja Biserko (Beta)
