The Islamic Community in Serbia (IZS) has called on a complete boycott on the buying and distribution of daily Blic. This was sparked by the photomontage of IZS leader Muamer Zukorlic which showed him dressed in the traditional frock of an Orthodox Christian bishop which appeared in the daily. IZS calls for boycott of daily The assembly of the Islamic Community in Serbia was held in Novi Pazar on Saturday to decide what its next move would be regarding the problems with the daily. Zukorlic told B92 that Serbia is being subjected to “Islamophobia” more and more. “The appearance of different kinds of attacks on Islam and Muslims is more common, by individuals and by the state institutions. Discrimination is all over this region and topping it off is this attack on the Islamic community and the support of Belgrade in breaking up the Islamic community,” Zukorlic said. Aida Corovic of the Urban In non-government organization said that the state needs to work on relations with minorities, especially Bosniaks, but that calling the current situation “Islamophobia” is more extreme than necessary. “I think that Mufti Zukorlic wants to show himself as a victim and this is definitely a way to be in the center of public attention both in Sandzak and all of Serbia,” she said. IZC is also suing Blic for damages worth EUR 100mn. Zukorlic said that he does not see a problem with the call to boycott Blic. “We, as an endangered community have the right to use all possible methods in the goal of protecting our identity, under the condition that these methods are not violent,” Zukorlic said. Blic Editor-in-Chief Veselin Simonovic has responded to the call for a boycott of his newspaper. “Calling for the boycott of a newspaper is not exemplary behavior, especially for a religious leader,” Simonovic said. “I think that that call will not work in stopping people from buying Blic as much as they have been buying it. I doubt that the people who follow the mufti read the papers a lot,” Corovic said. Muamer Zukorlic (Tanjug)
