Culture and Information Minister Nebojsa Bradic says that “purely economic reasons” are behind the announced exit of the WAZ media group from Serbia's market. “When a company does not achieve a part of the projected economic policy it moves on to another market. It is nothing new and unusual,” Bradic said in a statement published by Vecernje Novosti today. “WAZ pulling out for economic reasons” Bradic said that the German media company had not approached the Ministry of Culture with any kind of remarks that would indicate that it is encountering problems with the operation of the dailies Politika and Dnevnik. “I believe that it will soon become a normal thing to have media change their owner, according to the market demands,” said Bradic. Bradic also expressed his confidence that Politika will gain new co-owners who will enable it to operate well and that the withdrawal of WAZ should not shake up the domestic media scene. The minister underscored that the upcoming presentation of a media study, which should regulate the situation in the domestic media scene, is the beginning of the European path for Serbia's media. Meanwhile, German Ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas told journalists today that he was not satisfied with the decision of one of Germany's investors to pull out of Serbia. Commenting on the decision the company made to leave the Serbian market and sell off 50 percent of its shares in Belgrade daily Politika, Maas said that it was the company's business decision and that he was not informed about its decision to pull out of Serbia. “I cannot be happy about it, because I have been investing efforts for three years to present Serbia as a country suitable for foreign investments,” he was quoted as saying. According to still unofficial information, Germany's WAZ has announced it would withdraw from Serbia because it is dissatisfied with it financial losses, public slander that had linked them with the underground and with the inefficiency of the domestic institutions and corruption. Unofficially, however, Tanjug reports, the company does not intend to fully drop its ownership in Serbia but only that of the daily Politika in order to be able to take full control of the Vecernje Novosti daily.
