Police who secured the area then intervened and according to Beta news agency, “dragged the assailant to a nearby entrance to a building in order to protect him”. Ilic, who is currently in hospital, told reporters after the incident that he would request that the attacker be strictly punished, because the attack took place “three meters from police and in front of cameras, in broad daylight”. He said that he was a victim of a similar attack a year ago, after which he underwent serious head surgery, from which he said he nearly did not recover. That case, the NS leader told journalists today, has not yet been solved. “I don’t know who he is, to be able to attack me in front of police, and I don’t know who sent him. If the minister of the interior cannot prevent this kind of thing he should resign,” said Ilic. Serbian police (MUP) identified the attacker as Dejan Stojadinovic, and said he was previously wanted on undisclosed charges. The motive of the attack remains unclear at this time.
