President Boris Tadic said that he and Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic will begin an initiative for criminal measures against violence in all segments of society. He said that the state must systematically and decisively fight violence, adding after talks with the Ombudsman, that it is not enough to suspend violence in one segment of society, if violence is allowed to bloom in another. "Systematic measures against violence" “We have been living in an atmosphere of violence for decades, starting with political speeches and hate speak, to the promotion of violence as a model of behavior for young people,” Tadic said. He said that there is a form of “legitimization of violence against women,” and that one woman is killed every week by her life partner. “We do not even have the proper policies for suspension and punishment that would deter violence in individual groups of our society,” Tadic said. He said that Serbia has not invested enough in the institutions of prison sanctions. Tadic also added that the administration in Serbia treats many initiatives as cases, not as initiatives which are concerned with the fate of people’s lives, which are at risk. “It is necessary for the administration that is beginning the initiative to follow through with the final results, and to follow whether the rights of citizens are protected with activities of the public services or endangered with their inactivity and passive relations,” Tadic said.
