The Serbian delegation at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) today reacted sharply to Bulgaria's arguments. The highest UN court, based in The Hague, has held the fourth day of public hearings in a case that should determine whether the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence was legal under international law. Serbian team comments on ICJ case The Serbian delegation, led by Ambassador Dusan Batakovic, was quoted as saying that Bulgaria "once again, like so many times throughout history, stabbed Serbia in the back", by defending Kosovo's secession before the court. At the same time, he commented that Brazil and Bolivia, who presented their arguments in favor of Belgrade – which has rejected the proclamation and considers it illegal – confirmed their interest in preserving international order. The presentations by the Brazilian and Bolivian ambassadors were "extremely professional and showed their interest in preserving international order and UN credibility", the Serbian legal team stated. Speaking before a panel of 15 ICJ judges, the Bolivian and Brazilian representatives said that the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo was a violation of international law, adding that the people in Kosovo did not have the right to secede, because, according to international regulations, that right is reserved solely for former colonies and territories under foreign occupation. Brazil and Bolivia backed Serbia in defending the view that Kosovo is its integral part, and, according to the Serbian delegation, they gave an excellent interpretation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which was breached by the secession. As for the case presented by Bulgarian representative Zlatko Dimitrov, who defended Kosovo's secession, the Serbian team members remarked that he had been in UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari's team, which "gave the green light to Kosovo's authorities to declare independence". The Serbian delegation stated that the representatives of Burundi had presented an extremely unconvincing interpretation of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence.
