Serbia "respects Macedonia's name"
27 November 2009 | 16:13 | Source: Tanjug
SKOPJE -- Serbian Deputy PM Božidar Đelić said in Skopje on Friday that Belgrade recognizes Macedonia under its constitutional name.

Greece has for almost two decades contested the former Yugoslav republic's right to use the name "the Republic of Macedonia".

If the two countries were to reach an agreement over a different name, then Serbia will respect that, on Macedonia's request, Đelić, who is attending a regional conference, commented.

At the same time, he expressed his "deep regret" over Macedonia's recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, and stressed that any border demarcation deals that came without the participation of the only legitimate factor – the Serbian government – were "null and void, and unconstitutional".

"We will treat this as such in the future," he said of a demarcation agreement recently reached by the Kosovo Albanian government in Priština and official Skopje.

Đelić also welcomed the European Parliament resolution on the EU enlargement strategy, adopted on Thursday, saying that the document was "yet another encouragement for all the Western Balkan countries".
