Deputy Prime Minister Božidar Đelić said that it is possible for Serbia to become a European Union member-state in 2014.

He spoke in Leskovac about the abolishment of visas for Serbian citizens, stating that he expects that there will soon be an unfreezing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), and that “it is expected” that a demand will be submitted to become a candidate-state for EU membership.
“2014 is, for now, the earliest possible date for entering the EU. It is very tight, but not impossible. If we completely harmonize our laws with the laws of the EU by 2012, we will enter around that time, right after Croatia,” Đelić said.
He also reminded of the Greek initiative for getting the remaining Balkan countries into the EU by 2014, which will be the 100-year anniversary of the beginning of World War I.
“There are many people that are skeptical, but I think that Serbia has a great chance,” Đelić said.
