Ambassador: Candidacy application step by step

BELGRADE -- German ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas told B92 that the process of applying for EU candidacy should be taken step by step.

He said that he is not sure whether applying before the end of the year would work to Serbia’s advantage, taking into consideration that the implementation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) should begin before the application is sent.

He said that he would welcome a decision of abolishing visas for Serbian citizens in mid-December.

“The final decision on this question will be made by the Council of Ministers some time in early December. If a date in December is given then, for several days before it was originally planned, it will only show that Serbia has done a good job in presenting convincing evidence that it has fulfilled all needed conditions,” Maas said.

He said that such a move would also confirm his opinion that Serbia does not lack the capacities to fulfill all conditions for progressing towards the EU.
