BELGRADE -- Serbia should join the EU, but it should also cooperate with Russia, says Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Konuzin.

In a lecture entitled "Russia and the Modern World" given at Belgrade's Megatrend University, the diplomat noted that Serbia should also "not forget it is a Slavic and Orthodox country".

"Russia has nothing against Serbia’s EU integration, but opinions on that differ even within Serbia," Konuzin stated.

Serbia is surrounded by EU member-states or candidates for accession, he said, and added that "it would therefore be good for Serbia to join the EU".

"It is, however very important that Serbia, after being admitted to the EU, should not forget that, as a Slavic and Orthodox country, it will be in a minority and that the only country to support it will be Russia," he said.

"Some East European countries have forgotten good relations with Moscow too soon," the ambassador emphasized, adding the EU is an important trade partner of Russia.
