PM: Statute has to be harmonized with law
5 November 2009 | 11:16 | Source: Tanjug
BELGRADE -- PM Mirko Cvetković says the Vojvodina draft statute has to be harmonized with a law on the transfer of jurisdiction.

Speaking for Belgrade daily Politika, he also denied that the proposed law is contrary to the Constitution of Serbia.

“I have to underline that temperature has been raised unnecessarily among a part of the public over the past months, and terms such as separatism, secession, alleged creation of a state within a state were used. This has nothing to do with the reality,” Cvetković said.

He confirmed that the Serbian government will discuss the draft law on the transfer of jurisdiction at today's session, underscoring that the essence of the whole process is to secure better functioning of the authority and to raise the efficacy of the state of Serbia.

When asked to comment on the remarks of the expert and political public that the bill is anti-constitutional, Cvetković said that he is not aware of any remarks of that kind.

“The only institution that gives a valid evaluation of constitutionality in this country is the Constitutional Court,” said he.

When asked whether he is in favor or against Vojvodina having its own capital, academy of sciences and arts, Cvetković replied that "as prime minister of the Republic of Serbia", he is in charge, among other things, of "making sure that everything runs in the country according to the Constitution and laws".
