President Boris Tadić said that the arrest of Hague fugitive Ratko Mladić is “a great obligation for the Serbian state and for its democracy”.
He said that regardless of EU demands and the Hague Tribunal, Belgrade must arrest Mladić because “he is accused of war crimes according to domestic laws as well”.
He told the Italian news agency ANSA that “the arrest of Mladić is a condition for reconciling the people of the former Yugoslavia and a condition for creating a normal and lawful society.”
Tadić aded that setting deadlines for Mladić’s arrest would be “counterproductive”.
The president stated that the longer Mladić is hiding, “the greater the danger it creates for the basic interests of the Serb people and the Serb state”.
With his behavior, Mladić is blocking the entire political process, the process of completing European integration, with the goal of improving the lives of Serbian citizens, continued Tadić.
“We are doing everything we can to arrest Ratko Mladić, and he will be arrested the moment he is located. If he is on Serbian territory, it will be much easier, and it will be harder if he isn’t, but Serbia will participate in all operations of the secret service in that direction,” Tadić said.
Speaking about Kosovo, Tadić said that he is convinced that the decision f the International Court of Justice will support Serbia’s stance on the issue.
As far as Bosnia-Herzegovina is concerned, Tadić said that Serbia supports the integrity of Bosnia and the Dayton Accord, and that an agreement must be reached that will be acceptable for all three peoples, rather than through imposed solutions from the outside.
