BELGRADE -- Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Konuzin stated that it was necessary to modernize the current security system in all of Europe.

“This is why Russia has launched the initiative to a contract signed on European security, which would provide equal and reliable guarantees for all the countries, no matter which military alliance they belong to,” Konuzin told the Serbian Economic Summit in Belgrade on Monday.

According to Russia's top diplomatic envoy to Serbia, Belgrade, which persists in its military neutrality, could be of special importance in this sector.

Konuzin stated that Serbia is one of Russia’s main partners in the region and that the recent visit of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Belgrade emphasized Serbia’s special position in the Balkans.

“Russia will help Serbia in the protection of its national interests,” the Russian ambassador said, and added that his country is opposed to illegal partition of Serbia's territory.

He also pointed out that the most important areas of economic cooperation between Serbia and Russia were oil, gas and energy sectors, “because it was what Serbia needs, and where Russia is strong”.
