"Support for Mladić arrest halved"
3 November 2009 | 09:41 | Source: B92
BELGRADE -- Rasim Ljajić says the "support for arresting Ratko Mladić decreased by half" after the extradition of Radovan Karadžić last summer.

The chief of the National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal told B92 that Wednesday’s visit to Belgrade by Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will be an opportunity to draw a line below what has been done so far.

Ljajić claims that no one can say for sure where war crimes fugitive Mladić is hiding, but that the Serbian authorities are searching for him intensively.

He said that he does not expect any surprises from the Brammertz visit, "since there is every day communication" with the prosecutor.

Brammertz said before his trip that he believes that Mladić and Goran Hadžić are located in Serbia, which Ljajić sees as a form of pressure.

Brammertz will also be presented the results of the newest opinion polls that show a significant drop in the support for Mladić’s arrest by the Serbian citizens.

Ljajić reminded that if Mladic is not arrested by the end of the year, he will be resigning as the leader of the action team for arresting the fugitives, which he believes would be the "moral" thing to do.

He added, however, that there is still time and that he hopes that "Mladić will not be more successful than all the people looking for him".
