Serbian and Turkish Presidents Boris Tadić and Abdullah Gul said that the two countries support one another’s paths towards European integration.

Tadić, after visiting Novi Sad's Petrovaradin Fortress with Gul, said that the unsolved questions in the Balkans "can only be resolved with the integration of the entire region into the EU".

“Integration into the EU is the essential peaceful solution for all the nations that live in Europe, and the largest peace project in the history of mankind, and is the only natural and real strategic goal of our country,” according to him.

He added that Serbia and Turkey have an obligation toward their citizens and the region to continue improving their political and economic relations.

“We do not have the same opinion on all issues, but that does not mean that we do not have an obligation and desire to build the best possible relations between our countries,” Tadić said.

Gul stated that he expects that cooperation between Serbia and Turkey will be "in the best interest of all of Europe".

He said that Turkish businesspeople have shown great interest in investing in Serbia, and that there are "great chances for excellent economic cooperation between the two countries".

“Serbia and Turkey have a common history. Between Serbia and Turkey there is a tradition of good relations and we want to improve them,” Gul was quoted as saying in reports from Novi Sad.

The two presidents visited the site in the fortress were a peace accord was signed in 1699 between the Ottoman Empire and Austria and its allies.

After returning to Belgrade, Tadić and Gul are expected to participate in a meeting on the economic development of Serbia's southwestern Sandžak region.
