The majority of Moscow media have pointed to the energy deals and pledged loan to Belgrade as the highlights of President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Serbia.
The Russian press says that Medvedev repeated that Serbia would continue to enjoy Moscow’s support over the Kosovo issue.
Daily Gazeta ran with the front page headline “EUR 1bn for old debt,” stating that the talks had chiefly focused on economic issues, especially the Serbian stake in the South Stream gas pipeline and the EUR 1bn loan that Moscow reportedly promised to Belgrade.
It was stated that the Russian money could help ease social tensions in the country, which has been hard hit by the economic crisis, the daily writes.
Vremya said that the start of the first visit by a Russian president to Serbia looked “a bit modest,” but that this did not stop Medvedev from honoring all his promises.
Medvedev gave support to the Serbian position on Kosovo and showed understanding for Belgrade’s wish to integrate into the EU, the daily wrote.
Vremya added that the exact size of the loan had not been made clear and that negotiations had run all day regarding the issue.
The daily writes that the visit clearly demonstrated Russia’s unwavering support over the Kosovo issue, which was “music to the ears of Serbian President Boris Tadić.”
Daily RBK stated that Serbia had made an extra effort to make sure that Medvedev enjoyed his visit.
