Power restored to northern Kosovo
21 October 2009 | 09:35 | Source: B92
KOSOVSKA MITROVICA -- Several thousand Serbs from northern Kosovo have received electricity after going without for 16 hours.

They believe that the Kosovo Electric Corporation (KEK) shut down the power because of unpaid bills. The Serbs say they are prepared to pay, though the majority do not want to pay KEK.

Power was restored at midday after the Serbian electricity system intervened.

The power cut severely hampered life in northern Kosovska Mitrovica and all of northern Kosovo.

There are currently 4,000 patients at the hospital in northen Kosovska Mitrovica.

District Governor Radenko Nedeljković dismissed claims by KEK officials that the power cut had been due to a fault with the power lines.

He said that the move had been politically motivated, and that the arrival of KEK personnel in the north was to create the illusion ahead of the local elections that Prišina controlled that part of the province too.
