MOSCOW --
President Boris Tadić said that Serbia joining the EU represents no danger to Russia, adding that such a development "can only be positive for Moscow".
“In the European Union we will be Russia’s best friend. That will help in all aspects of relations between the two countries,” Tadić told Russia0s television station Vesti-24.
In the interview broadcast ahead of Tuesday's visit to Belgrade by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Tadić said that Serbia is striving to join the EU, and that this does not constitute for "a choice between East and West", Interfax reported.
“I do not see any danger related to our intentions to join the EU,” Tadić said.
He added that energy cooperation between Serbia and Russia is very important, and that Serbia is content with the way that “Gazprom Neft is dealing with the modernization of Serbian Oil Industry [NIS].”
The president said that Serbia-s neighbors are "also oriented towards the EU", which he said would be a new EU market for Gazprom.
