OSCE praises efforts against human trafficking
16 October 2009 | 14:14 | Source: Tanjug
BELGRADE -- OSCE mission chief to Serbia Dimitrios Kypreos has praised the government’s efforts in combating human trafficking.

Ahead of October 18, European Day Against Human Trafficking, Kypreos said that “the OSCE mission fully supports efforts by the Serbian authorities to conduct a national strategy in combating human trafficking.”

“We are contributing to the cause by giving expert advice and through activities whose goal is to strengthen the institutional and professional capacities of police officers, prosecutors, judges and social workers in Serbia,” he said.

He highlighted the Interior Ministry’s role in increasing the number of investigations and solved cases, as well as in identifying the victims.

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić stated that “human trafficking debases human dignity and undermines technological, scientific and industrial development of any society”.

“Serbia is a country of origin of men, women and children trafficking at both international and national level, mostly for sexual exploitation and forced labor,” read a statement from the Interior Ministry.

The majority of victims identified in Serbia in 2009 were women, while half were children. One of the mission’s priorities is combat human trafficking, the statement adds.
