EULEX: Tough conditions for judges
7 October 2009 | 12:37 | Source: Tanjug
PRIŠTINA -- EULEX says the judicial system in Kosovo is not sufficiently protected from outside influence, and that Kosovo judges are working under difficult conditions.

The EU mission in Kosovo says that judges are constantly subjected to threats and pressure.

EULEX has called on all interested institutions, especially the Kosovo Court Council, to consolidate its obligations to ensure that judges and prosecutors work “in an atmosphere without threats, pressure or promises.”

“It is of essential importance to build a fair, effective and credible judicial system in Kosovo,” EULEX states.

The mission says that the judges’ deliberations on verdicts should remain confidential, which is a basic rule that guarantees the independence and impartiality of the judges, whose decisions should be in accordance with existing laws and based on evidence.

Judges in Kosovo are not abiding by the rules during sensitive cases, EULEX notes, calling on the Kosovo government to address the problem of insufficient protection of the judiciary and to protect prosecutors and judges from threats and pressures.
