All parties save the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) voted in favor of the motion.
Belgrade Mayor Dragan Đilas stressed that the City Council had supported the proposal because Moratinos had helped improve Belgrade’s image in the world.
“Moratinos is the foreign ministry of a nation that has been steadfast on its position of non-recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence, and which has affirmed its principled position of respecting international law and upholding Serbia’s legitimate interests,“ he reiterated.
Đilas stressed that the Spanish minister backed abolition of the EU visa regime for Serbian citizens and had championed Serbia’s further affirmation in the EU.
The LDP’s Dejan Ranđić said that his party had not supported the initiative “because it’s entirely inappropriate for a city assembly to be discussing recognition or non-recognition of Kosovo,“ and that “Belgraders didn’t elect the government for that.“
Moratinos began his diplomatic career as Spain’s ambassador to Belgrade.
