Speaking of Serbia’s proposed application for EU membership, Wordsworth told daily Danas that “Belgrade should wait until it’s clear that all EU member states are ready to give a positive response to that application.”

He said that the UK continued to be one of the biggest advocates of EU enlargement.

“We believe the process of European integration has played a vital role throughout Central and Eastern Europe, encouraging and spurring political, economic and social reform that has helped the development of many states since the collapse of communism, and allowed them to become successful free market democracies,” the ambassador explained.

He said that the EU played a very important role in the Western Balkans, both in terms of helping overcome the legacy of the Nineties and in integration with other parts of Europe.
