"Serbia fulfills visa conditions"
29 September 2009 | 09:57 | Source: Tanjug
BELGRADE -- Serbia has fulfilled all conditions for the lifting of the visa regime, says an EP official.

If everything goes in line with the expectations, the Serbian citizens should have their visa regime abolished as of January 1, 2010, European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur for visa liberalization for the Western Balkan countries Tanja Fajon has stated.

"I do not expect any hindrances for Serbia. Our committee is to decide on the matter on October 15 and the EP will consider it at a plenary session in November. Moreover, three largest political blocks, which are EP's majority, agree on Serbia's issue," Fajon said in an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Politika.

She believes that the pending question of Kosovo's status is not important for the visa regime liberalization, adding that the Serbian government has decided that passports for the Serbian citizens living in Kosovo will be issued in Belgrade only.

"Such a solution is acceptable for the European Commission. In my report, which will be discussed by the EP, Kosovo is mentioned no more than in a single sentence, proposing that it should also be included in the process of visa regime liberalization, provided that would not be prejudging Kosovo's status," Fajon was quoted as saying.
