German Brig. Gen. Benedikt Zimmer says the NATO-led force in Kosovo will continue to secure some Serbian Church, SPC, structures. The commander of KFOR's southern sector explained that this will include the Holy Archangels monastery in Prizren, despite an initiative that came from about a dozen NGOs in Kosovo demanding that police and international troops no longer engage there. KFOR to continue to guard SPC structures "We will perform our tasks in the future, despite the fact that they [NGOs] claim it is shameful for all Prizren residents who have lived together for centuries, and discriminating because other structures belonging to other religions are not being protected'," said Zimmer. The Serbian Orthodox monastery, built in the 14th century, was first attacked and pillaged by members of the KLA after the 1999 war in the province, and then set on fire by mobs of ethnic Albanians in March 2004. Zimmer also told a news conference – his first since taking over his post a month ago – that there are some 2,300 German soldiers in Kosovo at this point. "Personally, I think we will remain here for a number of years. The troop numbers depend on the current situation. Plans about a possible reduction are ongoing on NATO and Bundeswehr [German army] levels, but that cannot be talked about yet," he was quoted as saying.
