BELGRADE --
Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić will call before the UN Security Council for an end to pressure being put on countries worldwide to recognize Kosovo independence.
Prior to leaving for tomorrow’s UN Security Council session, he said that the situation in Kosovo was very troubling and difficult, which UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had also noted in his report.
“We will insist on discussing the situation on the field, on looking in the eyes the hardships that the non-Albanian population faces,” Jeremić said.
He added that “this will be a chance to speak on the largest international stage about what kind of pressure is being put on countries all over the world to recognize Kosovo.”
He said that Serbia would call for an end to the pressure being exerted on countries to recognize Kosovo, in view of the fact that the International Court of Justice had officially begun to consider the question of the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration.
Commenting on the first anniversary of the promulgation of the Kosovo constitution, on the occasion of which the Priština assembly had conferred a medal to former Kosovo envoy Martti Ahtisaari, Jeremić said that it was clear proof of all of Belgrade’s initial misgivings about the former Finnish president.
“When a negotiator finishes a process without a solution acceptable to both sides, and then one side decorates him,” Jeremić said, “this is proof that he was not a neutral negotiator.”
Jeremić said that Ahtisaari had supported the declaration of Kosovo independence from the outset, a process that Serbia had been able to impede using legal means.
