Interior Minister Ivica Dacic today said that no concrete agreement was made within the government related to the Kovacevic case. Instead, he told reporters in Belgrade on Sunday, some proposals were considered. Dacic won't confirm deal in Kovacevic case Dacic reminded that the case, which was debated during a cabinet session, was marked confidential as suggested by the foreign and justice ministries, and that he was "against it". But the session did not make any conclusions, the minister continued, and said that what was leaked to the media was considered "in the form of a proposal - which does not mean that a deal was made". "Where will the money come from, how will the deal be made, this is just a way to have him tried in the country. But if you think that the state should continue to be at war with America, there are other ways to do it," Dacic was quoted as saying. "As far as I'm concerned, I did not take any part in those talks at all, and, as far as I'm concerned, he should answer in front of every court because he is guilty," continued the minister. Dacic, who is also first deputy prime minister, said that the case must be closed because the state of Serbia, through its officials, gave guarantees to the United States that Kovacevic would not leave that country. He repeated that MUP (Serbian police) would not exert pressure on journalist, "not even when it comes to Borba daily that published confidential information from a government session". Kovacevic fled the United States last year after he jumped bail, accused of seriously injuring a fellow student in a barroom brawl. He was issued with temporary travel documents by the Serbian consulate in New York, and returned to Serbia. Earlier this week, the media in Belgrade said the government was prepared to pay a total of USD 1mn in compensation in order to resolve the impasse in the case. Kovacevic refuses to return to the U.S. and face the courts there, while Serbia cannot legally extradite her citizens to other countries. Dacic is seen in Belgrade on Sunday (Tanjug)
