Serbia lost trust in NATO, says FM
8 February 2009 | 14:11 | Source: Blic, Tanjug
BELGRADE -- NATO has lost Serbia's trust "because of the role it had in creating the Kosovo Security Forces", says Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić.

"That represents a flagrant violation of Resolution 1244, which we find unacceptable," he told daily Blic in an interview published today, at the same time reminding that "NATO secretary general expressed readiness to talk about possible revisions of the Kumanovo agreement, although the EU rejected this".

"At this point," Jeremić continued, "we have closer ties with Russia than with the U.S., since there is not a single open issue between us and Russia, while there is disagreement with Washington when it comes to the future status of Kosovo and Metohija."

"We are trying to cooperate with the U.S. in the closest possible way on all the other questions," he added.

Asked "whether the Kosovo issue ought to be a barrier in the relations between Serbia and the United States", the minister said: "We have a constitutional obligation to defend the territorial wholeness of the country and we will continue to do so using all legal, political and diplomatic means, bearing in mind other state interests."

Jeremić once again reminded that Serbia sees the defense of the constitutional order, accelerated EU integrations and improved regional relations as the foreign policy priorities.

The foreign minister believes that the country's diplomatic activity up until this point has been "successful", because "a relatively small number of countries recognized Kosovo despite huge pressures".

"We have also managed to transfer this issue from the political to the legal arena and gained the support of the majority of the world at the UN," Jeremić concluded.
