Serbs, Albanians gather, no incidents
7 January 2009 | 12:46 | Source: B92, Beta
KOSOVSKA MITROVICA -- Local Serbs and Albanians gathered in the Suvi Do neighborhood of Kosovska Mitrovica last night, but they soon dispersed without incidents.

Half an hour before people started arriving at the spot, two vehicles, owned by a Serb and an Albanian, were damaged.

Kosovo police, KPS, spokesman Besim Hoti said the cars were damaged by unknown perpetrators and that upon hearing about the incident, groups of "30 to 50" people from both sides started gathering, blocking a road that goes through the area.

Northern Kosovska Mitrovica policemen sought assistance from the southern precinct in order to keep the situation under control, Hoti said.

Policemen intervened and talked to the citizens, after which they dispersed.

The spokesman also explained that, "bearing in mind the situation in the field", police had coordinated its actions and information with EULEX and KFOR in order to secure assistance and intervention if needed.

The ethnically divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica has been the scene of a string of incidents in the past weeks, prompting President Boris Tadić to ask the international community to protect the local Serbs.
