SNS leader Tomislav Nikolić says that his party will not take part in any reconstruction of the government “without an overwhelming need”.

“Without any overwhelming need, without the need for us all to be in power, the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) will not be taking part in any kind of government reconstruction. We are in the opposition,” said Nikolić.
He said that the entry of the SNS into the government at this moment in time would be “heresy“.
“If the budget was in line with what the SNS was after, we could vote for it in normal circumstances, but in these circumstances they’d say—well, that’s why we broke away from the Serb Radical Party (SRS), so that Tadić could get his twenty something MPs, and not to have to worry any more during votes in parliament. That’s why I’m telling you that at this moment in time it would be heresy,” the SNS leader told state broadcaster RTS.
He stressed that the most important job in Serbia currently was preserving citizens’ social security, adding that the SNS was willing to help the current government if it was in a position to help address this.
“We won’t be part of the government, we want to be a part of those responsible for Serbia’s fate. Is the Democratic Party (DS) the backbone of the coalition that is in power? OK, we’ll help them. Can we combat crime, what law is required… Let’s all help adopt it,” said Nikolić.
The SNS leader added everyone should unite in tackling the financial crisis, which, he predicted, would assume major proportions.
He said that he would like to see early parliamentary elections in order to show the SNS’s power, but that they should not be held “if they disrupt plans for Serbia’s survival and recovery.”
