SPS: Serbia “returning” to Russia
18 December 2008 | 13:31 | Source: Politika
BELGRADE -- Socialist Party of Serbia official Branko Ružić says that Serbia’s foreign policies are not turning towards Russia, but “returning.”

He told daily Politika that this did not mean that Serbia was giving up on European integration, which remained one of the chief priorities of Serbian foreign policy.

“The SPS has never turned away Russia, and I think that we have proven the wisdom of our insistence the whole time on maintaining good relations with Russia. By returning to Russia, we are returning balance to our foreign policies. If the Russian Federation and the EU have a common denominator which is mutual interests, why wouldn’t we satisfy our interests with both Russia and the EU,” Ružić said.

“Russia has never questioned, indeed it has always strongly affirmed Serbia’s wish to join the EU, and the EU has never questioned the need for countries to protect their individual state and national interests, or to focus on partners that are most compatible for achieving these interests. The gas-energy agreement is not just an economic issue, but also a political and security issue,” he said.
