The Serb Radical Party has scrapped the position of deputy chairman, held by Tomislav Nikolic prior to the party's break-up, writes daily Vecernje Novosti. Nikolic used that position to split away from the presidency and do what he did,“ said senior party official Milorad Mircic. The paper adds, however, that the personnel upheavals are unlikely to solve the Radical’s main handicap—the absence of a leader. A wall has existed for almost two months between Seselj and the SRS, after the Hague Tribunal cut off priveleged contact between Seselj and his legal team. The prosecution believes he used the opportunity to send political instructions “across the wire“ via his lawyers. In Seselj’s absence, Dragan Todorovic has taken over the day-to-day running of the party. Todorovic is a first among equals, as all the political tasks are carried out by the presidential collegium. “The Tribunal is trying to break Seselj through premeditated isolation, forcing him to accept their shameful deal in exchange for admitting his guilt,“ said Todorovic. “Nonetheless, he can call us, and in short conversations that are tapped, we discuss everything bar the trial. I outline my political views to him and update him on the situation in the country,“ added Todorovic. Novosti understands that Seselj receives a phone card from the Tribunal that gives one minute of phone time for every euro.
