Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen says that Serbia’s EU accession is only possible through a constructive approach, as shown on the EULEX issue. “This kind of approach will of course improve relations between Serbia and the EU,” Rasmussen told Belgrade daily Politika. Danish PM welcomes “constructive approach” Rasmussen also said that the EU would not condition Serbia’s further EU integration with recognition of Kosovo, adding that there were a number of EU member-states that had not recognized Kosovo. “It wouldn’t be fair to impose such a condition on Serbia,” he said. “Here and now I don’t see Kosovo as an obstacle for Serbia, because it has shown full cooperation in the agreement on EULEX deployment,” the Danish prime minister said. Rasmussen said that the focus now should be on ratification and implementation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) and on visa regime liberalization, adding that “Denmark supported Serbia’s progress in its relations with the EU.” "In the end, when a final decision on Serbia’s EU accession is reached, we will have to make sure that there are no border conflicts between Serbia and other countries. Because if you want to join, there shouldn’t be any conflicts over borders, because good neighbourly cooperation is an important element in EU integration,” he noted. Rasmussen said that trade between the two countries had significantly grown in the last few years, though adding that cooperation had started from a very low level. “I want to enhance cooperation, and not just in the fields of energy and ecology. That’s why we have organized a Round Table where Danish and Serbian ministers can assess the possibilities for boosting both trade and investments,” the prime minister said. Rasmussen said that in the last few years Serbia had significantly improved investment conditions, and that his message to Danish business circles was that there were good investment possibilities in this country and that they should be capitalized on. He said that in light of the ongoing financial crisis, Serbia should continue its economic reforms in order to join the EU. “It will be detrimental if the financial crisis is used as an excuse to slow down the reform process,” Rasmussen stressed.
