A group of NGOs has called on MUP to ban a rally planned for October 11 by organizations that spread religious, racial and ethnic intolerance. In a letter from eight NGOs to the police, it is stated that aim of their campaign is the prohibition of rallies that inspire religious, racial and ethnic intolerance, incite attacks on state organs, civil society organizations, other citizens, and encourage intolerance. NGOs call for ultra-Right rally ban The letter is signed by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, the Humanitarian Law Center, Women in Black, the Center for Cultural Decontamination, the Center for Peace and Democratic Development, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, the JUKOM Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights and the Queeria Center. “We would point out that a glance at the web sites of certain organizations, such as, for example, ’Blood and Honor’, is proof of their racist program which contains Hitler’s speeches and where his birthday is proudly celebrated,“ the letter states. “The objective of such rallies is the desire for violence, provocation of people who oppose the revival of Nazism, and deliberate instigation of clashes with police organs, who are forced to get involved in the line of duty,“ the NGOs add. The signatories of the letter want to be promptly informed of measures the authorities are planning to take, and reiterate that according to Serbian criminal law, racial discrimination and inciting hatred carry a prison sentence of six months. “We firmly believe that it is in the general interest for the police to ban this kind of rally to prevent a repeat of the incidents when these elements are permitted to endanger other people’s property and lives,“ the letter to MUP concludes.
