Kosovo is de facto on the EU stabilization and association process, says EC Director for the Balkans Pierre Mirel. “We have two states that are not officially part of the (stabilization and association) process. Firstly Serbia, which has signed the agreement that won’t be applied until full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal is achieved, and Kosovo,“ said Mirel, after a meeting with Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu yesterday. EC: Kosovo heading for EU He said that in the next two or three months dicussions would begin on Kosovo at the European Commission (EC), stressing that the province was part of this process, even though it had still not signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). Speaking of the process of Kosovo’s EU membership, Mirel reiterated that numerous obligations still had to be fulfilled and good neighborly relations ensured. Sejdiu said that Kosovo would work towards signing the SAA regardless of the challenges that lay in wait during that process. The Kosovo president asked for the EC’s help in the independence recognition process, particularly in the case of those EU members who have still not recognized the province’s unilateral independence declaration. Mirel also met with Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci yesterday. The EC is due to publish its annual progress report on the Western Balkan countries in November.
