Serb officials from northern Kosovo have welcomed the government’s decision to support the new Kosovo Serb assembly. President of the Serb National Council for Northern Kosovo Milan Ivanovic told Beta that in light of yesterday’s decision, he expected Democratic Party (DS) and G17 Plus councilors to take part in the new assembly’s work as it was important for this to be a strong institution “that best expresses the interests of the Serbs, cooperates and works in concert with Belgrade.“ Kosovo Serbs welcome govt. support The Kosovo Serb assembly was formed on June 28 in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, though DS and G17 Plus representatives did not attend the assembly’s constitutive session, claiming that they were waiting for Belgrade’s official view on the matter. “The government’s decisions should express full unity and we expect the government to be united when Kosovo is at stake. We expect the government to have a pragmatic view of the results of the May 11 elections in Kosovo, and of the fact that the parties in power in the province are in the opposition at republic level,“ said Ivanovic. Assembly Deputy Speaker Marko Jaksic said that that institution would not oppose Belgrade when it came to the national interests of the Serbs in the province. “We’ll fight to keep Kosovo within Serbia, we won’t allow EULEX as a mission to materialize in Kosovo, or for any symbols of Albanian statehood to be present in the province,” Jaksic told Beta.
