Yevgeny Primakov says that Serbs from southern parts of Kosovo should move to the north and merge with Serbia. “I think that the best solution now would be for the Serbs to move from the southern parts to the north, which are closer to Serbia, and then join Serbia. I am aware that some could criticize me for saying that the Serbs need to leave central parts of Kosovo, but I believe that this could be one solution to the problem,” the former Russian foreign minister told daily Vecernje Novosti. Primakov advises Serbs: Migrate and merge He said that the Americans were strong and were relying on the NATO presence in Kosovo. “However, they too will have to look for a modus vivendi. If clashes continue, the NATO forces cannot stay there forever, and another solution will need to be found to get out of this situation,” Primakov warned. The former foreign minister said that this was the first time in history that an autonomous region had been allowed to secede. “An autonomous province, not a republic of a federal country, seceded without an agreement from the rest of the state,” he explained. Primakov said that it was not in the U.S.’s interests to support Albanian separatists in other regions until the Kosovo independence question had been resolved. “If Kosovo is recognized and becomes a UN member, the U.S. might not want to stop others who decide to take a similar path. For now, I don’t think the U.S. will support separatist Albanians in Macedonia,” the former foreign minister predicted. He said that the process of merging and changing borders could move in two separate directions. “On the one hand, the Albanians moving to Macedonia, Montenegro and even Serbia will be active. On the other hand, what happened in Kosovo could also have an impact in Bosnia,” Primakov said. He added that this could be exploited by Serbs in the Republic of Srpska and Croatians who “want to get out of the federation with Muslims and join Croatia,” adding that this could start a process that could bring down the Dayton Accords. “The recognition of Kosovo independence was not a very well conceived move by the West. It is not a wise move by the Americans and their allies in Europe, and it could lead to repercussions that will endanger the current borders in the Balkans and destabilize the situation,” the former foreign minister suggested. Primakov added that it should be taken into consideration that an independent Kosovo represented the beginning of the creation of a strong Muslim country in the middle of Europe.
