Minister urges Rehn to specify EU position

BELGRADE -- The education minister has urged Olli Rehn to say if Brussels observes Serbia's internationally recognized borders.

Zoran Lončar has repeated Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica’s call yesterday to the EU enlargement commissioner to state whether the EU viewed Serbia as an intact country, or it saw the country without 15 percent of its territory.

“Olli Rehn used to comment on everything that was happening in Serbia, everything from football to Kosovo, but now he keeps silent when the Serbian prime minister asks him in public, since he is an authorized European commissioner, whether the EU observes Serbia's internationally recognized borders,” Lončar told Tanjug.

The minister wondered why Olli Rehn was concealing Brussel's stand on something that every citizen of Serbia wanted to know.

“Up to now, Rehn has been good at chewing the fat with Serbia, giving it a number of recommendations and setting ever more conditions. Why doesn't he now clearly say to the citizens of Serbia if the EU respects Serbia's internationally recognized borders or sees the country as lacking 15 percent of its territory?” he wondered.

According to Lončar, it was high time that, instead of patronising Serbia by remaining silent, the commissioner responded to the question he had been asked.

“Whatever his answer may be, the message of the Serbian people is clear - Kosovo is Serbia,” Loncar declared.

The minister said that the Democratic Party of Serbia was no longer interested in a referendum on Serbia’s EU integration with or without Kosovo, given that “there was no longer the will on the other side, and that the president had made this loud and clear.”
