Serbian Railways takes over in Kosovo
3 March 2008 | 11:24 -> 17:46 | Source: Beta
ZVEČAN -- Serbian Railways, ŽS, has taken over control of a part of its infrastructure in Kosovo Monday.

The move came after nine years, and on the 60-kilometer stretch of railway between Lešak and Zvečan in northern Kosovo, the public enterprise's chairman of the managing board, Branislav Ristivojević, DSS, has confirmed in Zvečan today.

Ristivojević told reporters that the move will ensure better quality of transport, and noted that the railway company operating there under UNMIK's jurisdiction since 1999 was unable to perform according to the SŽ standards.

"Once we have ascertained that the railway is safe according to our standards, the traffic in this part of Kosovo will resume," Ristivojević said.

This morning, Serbs employed by the Kosovo railways stopped a passenger train in Zvečan.

The train was traveling on the Kosovo Polje-Lešak line.

A large number of local Serbs joined their compatriots employed with the railway, calling on them to "stop working for the institutions of a quasi-state".

The Serbian Railways representatives are in town for talks with those workers who are employed by the provincial railways, some 50 of them.

The Serbian Railways has 160 people on its payroll in northern Kosovo.

UNMIK has reacted this afternoon by saying that they were not aware that Serbian Railways has taken over this part of the railway.
