The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) has decided to support Velimir Ilic's bid to become the country's next president. Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's party said in a statement that New Serbia (NS), led by Ilic, who is also infrastructure minister, is its closest coalition ally. Kostunica's DSS backs Ilic for president Therefore the decision to back Ilic is "the most natural one", the DSS said. "From the very start of the multi-party system Velimir Ilic has genuinely and forcefully fought for a democratic and economically strong Serbia. He proved this as a successful minister in two cabinets," the statement read. The decision to support Ilic, one of nine contenders in the vote scheduled for January 20, was made by the DSS main board. In May last year, Kostunica retained his post of prime minister after a coalition deal between his party, New Serbia, Boris Tadic's Democrats (DS) and G17 Plus. The largest party of the ruling coalition, the DS, backed Kostunica at the time expecting that its leader, Tadic, will receive support in his bid to be reelected Serbia's president.
