UNMIK deputy head Steven Schook has left Kosovo, after being told that his contract will not be renewed. UNMIK spokesman Alexander Ivanko informed the AP news agency of the dismissal of Schook, who is under investigation because of his links with some members of the Kosovo authorities, on Tuesday. UNMIK deputy to be replaced Schook, whose mandate as UNMIK deputy head will officially expire on December 31, will not be invited back to participate in the mission, said Ivanko. The spokesman offered no reason as to why he had been requested to leave or any details about the investigation. The retired U.S. general told local media in September that the UN office was investigating his links with Kosovo officials, including Energy Minister Ethem Ceku, who led a multimillion-dollar power plant construction project. Schook is also under investigation because of his unprofessionally close relationship with former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commander and former prime minister Ramush Haradinaj, who is on trial at the Hague Tribunal for war crimes.
