British officials are trying to dissuade Kosovo Albanians from unilaterally proclaiming independence, reports suggest. “The Kosovo Albanian team was in London yesterday meeting with Foreign Office officials regarding key aspects of the Kosovo problem, specifically regarding the intentions of Pristina to unilaterally proclaim Kosovo independence after December 10,” according to today’s edition daily Frankfurtske Vesti. UK looks to avoid unilateral Kosovo moves The Foreign Office called for a meeting with the Kosovo team, not only for the purpose of consultations, but for "certain instructions" as well, the daily writes. “According to information from British sources, Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu, Prime Minister Agim Ceku, Democratic Party of Kosovo leader Hashim Thaci and ORA leader Veton Surroi, were summoned to London in order to make a pledge that they would not proclaim Kosovocs independence unilaterally after December 10,” the daily states. “In other words, the instructions from the UK to Pristina were to ‘cool off’, while Anglo-American diplomats, with the help of France, try and secure an ‘appropriate atmosphere’ within the European Union and its member countries,” Vesti writes. “This is reliable information according to which the British, along with the Americans and French, are already working through diplomatic channels in order to get EU member states to show readiness to unilaterally recognize a new Albanian state in the Balkans,” the daily states. “The diplomatic campaign is currently focused on Germany and Italy. London believes that if Berlin and Rome do not get on board, the planned temporary EU control over Kosovo will be jeopardized.” “The Foreign Office is also taking into account the fact that within the Pristina team there is a division between those who are willing to take the advice of their Western friends and wait for diplomatic maneuvers to end, and those who wants to proclaim an Albanian state on December 10 regardless,” the daily stated, adding that according to sources, Ceku and Surroi were the “hardliners”, while Sejdiu and Thaci were more “moderate.”
