BELGRADE --
The head of the EC delegation to Serbia warns anti-ANTO statements may not reflect positively on EU integration.
“European and Atlantic integrations are complementary and coherent processes and should be perceived as such,” Josep Lloveras said Friday.
Speaking at a news conference in Belgrade dedicated to an annual award for best reporting on the European integration, Lloveras expressed hope that “Serbia will find a way to cooperate and work on promoting relations with NATO.”
Tanja Miščević, head of the Serbian government’s EU Integration Office, reminded that all Western Balkans states must first join NATO to become eligible for full EU membership.
With that in mind, both Lloveras and Miščević underscored that it was very important the citizens, who are to decide Serbia’s NATO membership, should be given correct information regarding the role of the Alliance.
They also reminded that the full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal has been set as a condition for signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), a first step toward EU membership.
Lloveras said that European Commission progress report on Serbia’s EU integration would be published on November 7, adding there is still time to “include the latest achievements and developments into the report.”
