“Serbia overrates Kosovo’s importance”
In an interview with Novi Sad daily Građanski List, Polt reiterated that Kosovo was a unique case.“For the first time ever the international community entered a state and took over the administration of its part,” he explained.
“With that in mind, the international community is responsible for the future of the region it administers, which is why it will decide over its future status. There is no such case elsewhere in the world,” Polt said.
Polt stressed he had the greatest respect for the historic and religious importance Serbia attached to its southern province, but added that Kosovo’s independence would not rob Serbia of the right to continue with the same practice.
“What is more, the Ahtisaari plan that has been criticized here offers protection for those very rights Serbia deems imperative. The plan vested the international community with an obligation to guarantee that Serbia could keep exercising these rights which belong to the people and not to a piece of land.”
In his opinion, the status settlement process, though not rushed, can hinder the region’s progress if it remained unsolved.
“120 days of renewed negotiations should aim at peaceful separation and coexistence in the region,” Polt argued.
He added that Russia’s backing of the Serbian government’s standing on Kosovo did not contribute to reaching an agreement.
“If it indeed makes you happy that your [Serbian] government stalls the process, jeopardizing relations with neighboring states and the international community, then you should indeed be grateful to Russia and to your government,” Polt told the newspaper.
According to the U.S. ambassador, Kosovo would attain supervised independence by the end of the year, adding that even if it would come as a disappointment, he hoped the Serbian government would be able to "accept the facts and turn to the future".
