“Resolution unacceptable to Serbia will not pass”
9 July 2007 | 11:48 | Source: Beta, Reuters
BISHKEK -- Any Kosovo resolution that is unacceptable to Serbia will not succeed in the UN, Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

"Any decision on Kosovo is possible only on the basis of an agreement by both parties involved. No other decision will go through the UN Security Council," Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, RIA Novosti reported.

"Our position is well known and it is dictated by life, rather than by any artificial schemes," he said.

However, Lavrov did not explicitly say whether Russia would use veto in the UN.

Russia’s foreign minister’s statement comes the same day the UN ambassadors in the Council are being presented with the regular United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) report on the implementation of standards in the province.

The ambassadors are also expected to debate Kosovo afterwards.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will address the Council with his own report on UNMIK, in which he is expected to say that progress in Kosovo would be jeopardized in case the future’s status of the province was not settled.
